Hidden Figures tells the story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson – three brilliant African-American women working at NASA in 1961, so the unit was segregated by race and sex.
Following the success of Soviet Union’s launch of Yuri Gagarin to space, the pressure to send American astronauts increases, so Supervisor Vivian Mitchell assign Katherine to assist Al Harrison’s Space Task Group, because of her skills in analytic geometry, which makes her the first black woman on the team. Meanwhile, Mary Jackson wants to apply for an official NASA engineer position, but Supervisor Mitchell tells her that she needs to take certification courses, which are offered at the all-white nearby Hampton High School, so Mary decides to file a petition for permission to attend.
Dorothy learns about the impending installation of an electronic computer that threatens to replace human computers, so she decides to teach herself programming and trains her co-workers – she ends up being promoted to supervise the Programming Department. Throughout the movie, these three women fight through different scenarios of gender and race segregation, all the while proving their worth.
This movie approaches gender and race discrimination.
