North Country (2005)

Josey Aimes’s return to her native Minnesota after her failed marriage transforms her whole life. The single mother of two urgently needs a job, which she finds in the iron mines that have sustained the life in her hometown for generations. The work itself is hard, but Josie faces far more unbearable challenges. As one of only few women working in the mines, she has become a victim of numerous threats, harassment, physical and sexual violence.

The silence of those in power makes Josie start a battle against inequality. Despite the fierce resistance from a society that does not want to hear the truth, the female miners file the first-ever class action lawsuit for sexual harassment in the United States – a major milestone in the history of feminist movements both in the country and around the world.

North Country discusses social issues such as gender discrimination, violence against women and social inequality.
