The movie plot is based on the Rwandan genocide in the spring of 1994. It tells the story of Paul Rusesabagina – a man who tries to save his family and the lives of more than a thousand other refugees by providing them with shelter in Hôtel des Mille Collines, where he works as a manager. As the political situation in the country further escalates after the assassination of the president, Paul and his family witness the killing of neighbors and acquaintances. The first stage of the genocide has been started.
Violence worsens, as hatred and ruthlessness triumph. The UN peacekeeping forces fail to take assertive actions against the Interahamwe (paramilitary Hutu extremist group that aims to overthrow the Tutsi-led government) and a civil war erupts. Paul’s family and the hotel refugees must fight against all odds to save themselves.
Hotel Rwanda explores topics such as genocide, intolerance, discrimination, political corruption, and the repercussions of violence.
