The movie tells the story of Einar Wegener – an artist and husband whose life changes drastically, once he sets off on a journey of self-rediscovery. It all starts with an innocent request – Einar’s wife Gerda, also an artist, asks him to stand in for a female model who does not show up. As he poses as a woman for the painting Gerda is working on, Einar realizes that he defines himself as a completely different person to who he is used to be – a woman called Lili Elbe. This unexpected turn of events marks the beginning of the gradual withdrawal from Einar’s male identity and the acceptance of the female identity as Lili.
The inner conflict between the reality and Lili’s own truth becomes unbearable for her. While she is looking for professional help, Lili meets a doctor who offers her an innovative but also quite controversial solution – gender reassignment surgery. A surgery that has never been done before and hides many dangers.
Lili and Gerda’s relationship evolves as they both adjust to Lili’s revolutionary journey as a transgender pioneer.
This movie comments on the reality of the LGTBQ + community and the topic of gender identity.
