The Bluest Eye is Toni Morrison’s first novel, a book honored for its richness of language and boldness of vision. Set in the author’s hometown Lorain, Ohio, it tells the story of eleven-year-old Pecola Breedlove – a black girl from an abusive home who does not comply with the beauty and social standards of her time. Therefore, she prays for her eyes to turn blue so that she can be as beautiful and loved as all the blond, blue-eyed children in America. She desires change and her life does change – in painful, devastating ways.

The Bluest Eye remains one of Toni Morrisons’s most powerful, unforgettable novels and is now considered an American classic. Its main topic is the racial reality – hatred, self-hatred and hierarchy.
