The Hate U Give is the debut novel of American author Angie Thomas. It is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and examines topics like racism, police brutality and activism. A film adaptation was released in 2018.

16-year-old Starr Carter is a black girl whose transformation inspires and touches. Her life, split between her private (and mostly-white) school and her poor black neighborhood, turns upside down the moment she witnesses the death of her childhood best friend Khalil. The unarmed Khalil is shot three times by a white police officer, who has pulled them over. Once shy and afraid to speak up, Starr raises her voice and becomes part of something big – a fight for justice and equality. Because “What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be?”
